Vintage Thread O Life Silk Fully Fashioned Stockings VS005

Before nylon there was silk (if you were rich) and rayon (if you weren’t). The leg of these American Fully Fashioned stockings by Thread O Life are made from silk, while the foot is 8% cotton lined and the welt 100% cotton. They feature a Cuban heel which is very ‘40s in style as it’s much shorter than the Cuban heels we see in later years. The stockings come nestled in branded paper in their original box. The colour is stated as simply 'beige'.

It was never possible to knit  very sheer silk stockings due to the yarn. These are 'service weight' which is approximately 30 denier.

The box has the original price on: $2.25. In modern day USD this would be over $50.

Vintage Sizing: At a size 10.5, these stockings should officially fit a UK foot size 7, US foot size 5, Euro foot size 40. However, it was traditional for stockings in the 1940s to be worn a lot lower on the leg than we do today. I have size 8 feet and am a UK dress size 12, US 8 and they came up to mid thigh. While lovely for recreating a 1920s/30s look the official size is too short for modern wearers.

Welt Imprint: There is a welt imprint on the welt of these stockings. As with all vintage welt imprints unfortunately they will flake off when worn. If you do find a pretty welt imprint on a pair of stockings the best way to preserve it is to frame them and keep them as a piece of art.
