What Katie Did was the very first brand to reintroduce contrast colour seamed stockings to the modern vintage scene. Inspired by rare mid-century examples and developed in-house, our colourful seams sparked a hosiery revival that’s been widely imitated—but never matched. While other brands have followed suit, we remain at the forefront of retro hosiery innovation, combining deep historical knowledge with contemporary design and quality.
In fact, Katie has several genuine 1950s stockings in her personal collection with coloured seams—including navy, green, and pink on nude legs. These rare pieces helped inform the development of our own designs, which remain true to the original spirit of vintage hosiery with a playful, modern update.
We even heard from one customer whose relative was fired from a stocking factory in the 1950s for creating her own contrast seams—sneaking in coloured yarn through the overlocker. That rebellious spirit lives on in every pair we make.
